Miscellaneous Diseases Treatments

Miscellaneous disease conditions treated with Interventional radiology- IR treatments have become first-line care for a wide variety of conditions. Interventional Radiology is a specialty that combines the clinical and imaging based diagnosis with minimally invasive therapy. Some of the interventional procedures include:

Vascular procedures

  • Diagnostic angiography.
  • Embolization in refractory nasal bleeding or hemoptysis [Blood in cough].
  • Embolization of Head and Neck tumors like nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.
  • Embolization in Gastrointestinal Bleeding not amenable to endoscopic interventions.
  • Embolization of Post traumatic or post operative renal bleed.
  • Renal angioplasty in Renovascular hypertension.
  • Central Venous Access
  • Trans jugular liver biopsy
  • Angioplasty of Budd- Chiari Syndrome / IVC occlusion
  • IVC and Hepatic vein stenting.
  • Vena Cava Filter Placement in Deep vein thrombosis.
  • Trans jugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) for refractory bleeding, ascites or hepatic hydrothorax in patients with cirrhosis.

Non-vascular procedures

  • USG and CT guided FNAC and biopsies.
  • Percutaneous drainages of Liver abscess, abdominal collections,
  • Percutaneous biliary drainage and biliary stenting to reduce jaundice.
  • Trans gastric infected peripancreatic collection drainage in acute pancreatitis.
  • Percutaneous nephrostomy and ureteral stenting in obstructive uropathy [Hydronephrosis]
  • Fallopian Tube recanalization to treat infertility.
  • Esophageal stenting

Interventional Radiology Advantages

  • Most procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or require only a short hospital stay
  • General anesthesia is usually not required
  • Risk, pain and recovery time are often much less
  • Procedures are usually less expensive than surgery
